Much like April, May is a busy month for John "Bodie" Smith of Hartman Smith Racing. It starts this weekend with the Arby's NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta. John will once again be helping the Paul Richards Racing Nitro Funny Car driven by Dave Richards; he joins his father, Paul, and brother, Mike. The next NHRA race on the schedule is the Virginia NHRA Nationals, May 17-19, in Richmond. Last year, NHRA made its return to Virginia Motorsports Park and so did John when he drove for Chuck and Del Worsham. Although John won't be in the driver's seat for this year's event, look for him to be calling the shots on another Nitro Funny Car team...more details to come. Then, John will be headed overseas for round two of the European Funny Car Series at the FIA Main Event held at Santa Pod Raceway. The first race of the series was a success for both John Smith tuned Funny Cars as Kevin Chapman got the win over Kevin Kent in the final. However, Kent went home with the new European Speed and E.T. Records with a 4.23 e.t. at 286.49 mph; both teams are looking to continue their momentum into the Main Event, May 24-26. To finish the month, John will return as crew chief on the Justin Schriefer Racing Nitro Funny Car driven by Justin at the team's hometown track in Joliet, Il for the Route 66 NHRA Nationals beginning May 31st.
